Household Survival Item- CD's/DVD's

Those CD's and DVD's may be giving way to MP3's and OnDemand, but don't throw them out just yet! They can be a valuable and often overlooked tools for survival

Building tools for survival

Knowing how to build tools out of household items is essential. Now you may be thinking by now, how can CD's possibly help me survive. One already well known use in in survival situations, is a signal mirror. The reflective side of the discs are perfect for this. This can also be used as a crude(and I use this word heavily) surveillance system. Placing a disc or two at each doorway, and positioned near windows, will allow you to detect movement when proper lighting will allow.

The discs can also be used to redirect light to needed areas. Tie a handful together and voila you now have a reflective panel. Now you can set this up to redirect light to your solar panels, or to supplement your sun thirsty garden. Also redirecting more sunlight into your shelter will help you keep warmer in cold weather.

Now these discs are more than just mirrors. Anyone that has ever broken a CD/DVD knows that those little shards can be sharp. These can easily be affixed as weapons for hunting, or used as cutting tools. Now that doesn't mean go out and stock up on more DVDs in case of doomsday. These are uses for items you likely already have in your home, and never thought would help you survive.
